Households in New York paid an average of 24.43¢ per kilowatthour for electricity in 2024, 48% above the US average of 16.48¢. That ranks 7th highest of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The average residential bill was $139.53 a month on 571 kWh of monthly use (US: $142.26 on 863 kWh), the 23rd highest bill. Residential sales came to 2,543 kWh per resident over the year.
In July 2026, the latest month EIA has published, the residential average was 29.90¢, up 14.0% on July 2025; the US figure for the month was 18.31¢. Monthly figures are preliminary until EIA finalises the year.
70 respondents reported residential customers in New York on the full Form EIA-861 for 2024, and 46 smaller utilities filed the short form, which has no residential breakdown. Investor-owned utilities account for 78.2% of the residential customers reported.
