Median of the group's average residential prices, 2024, on the dial of all 1,230 US utilities. Ticks: median utility of any type; customer-weighted US average.

Electric cooperatives are non-profit utilities owned by the members they serve, most of them created in the 1930s and 1940s to electrify rural areas. Their boards set rates; in some states a commission also reviews them. Many buy their power from a generation and transmission cooperative.

548 respondents classed by EIA as electric cooperatives reported at least 1,000 residential customers for 2024, 18,370,065 residential customers between them.

The median average residential price among the 547 with bundled service was 13.74¢ per kilowatthour, with the middle half between 12.50¢ and 15.37¢; the median across all ownership types was 13.33¢ and the customer-weighted US average 16.48¢. The median bill was $149.95 a month.

The 443 that filed reliability data reported a median SAIDI of 263.0 minutes per customer including major event days and 147.0 minutes excluding them; the medians across all types were 184.5 and 99.8.

Average price is revenue divided by sales for the sector and year; it is not a tariff rate. Reliability figures are as reported by utilities to EIA on Form 861 and may use different calculation methods. Group figures are medians across utilities from the final 2024 file.
